Aftercare And Follow Up

Support is personal, not a script

Understanding the subject

Aftercare refers to support surrounding or following emotionally or physically intense experiences. It may involve hydration, a blanket, food, quiet, reassurance, space, medical attention, or a later conversation. Different people want different things, and needs may change between scenes.

Negotiation and preparation

Negotiate aftercare before play. Ask whether touch is welcome, whether conversation feels grounding, whether someone needs time alone, and how to handle unexpected emotional responses. Include the needs of all participants, including people who led the scene.

During and after participation

Check for injuries or unusual symptoms, and do not treat aftercare as a substitute for medical attention. Later check-ins can help identify misunderstandings or delayed feelings. Ask permission before contacting someone afterward if privacy matters.

Risks and misconceptions

Aftercare is not necessarily romantic or sexual. A person may want to leave promptly or decline physical affection. Respecting that preference is part of care.
