Scene Planning And Risk Assessment

Planning creates options, not certainty

Understanding the subject

A scene plan identifies intended activities, boundaries, foreseeable hazards, communication, environment, and support needs. It is a working agreement that should change when new information appears.

Negotiation and preparation

Consider who is involved, what equipment is used, physical accessibility, relevant health concerns, consent limits, spectators, time, and how to stop. Identify likely failure points, including communication breakdown or equipment problems.

During and after participation

Before beginning, check the environment and confirm the plan with everyone. During play, be willing to reduce intensity, switch activities, or end early. Afterward, discuss what worked and what should change.

Risks and misconceptions

Risk-aware approaches do not promise zero risk. They encourage honest discussion, skill development, and decisions that match the participants’ experience and circumstances.
