Equipment Care, Cleaning, and Storage

Equipment condition and material properties influence both physical risk and infection-control decisions.

Inspect and retire equipment

Look for damaged hardware, fraying, sharp edges, cracks, deterioration, or materials that cannot be cleaned appropriately.

Create a cleaning protocol

Separate clean and used items, follow manufacturer instructions, and record care practices for shared equipment.

Understanding the subject

Inspect restraints and impact implements for fraying, sharp edges, cracks, damaged hardware, or deterioration. Porous materials can be difficult to disinfect thoroughly, while nonporous surfaces may tolerate manufacturer-approved cleaning methods. Do not assume a product is body-safe merely because it is sold for adult use.

Applying the knowledge responsibly

Separate clean and used equipment, follow manufacturer guidance, retire damaged items, and document cleaning practices for shared tools. Emergency release and first-aid equipment should be accessible to responsible staff. Never improvise a load-bearing anchor without competent assessment.
