Ethical Non-monogamy, Polyamory, and Swinging
Consensual non-monogamy encompasses multiple relationship and sexual arrangements; the terms are not interchangeable.
Clarify the relationship structure
Ask what each person means by openness, partnership, exclusivity, and disclosure. Agreements may differ substantially across relationships.
Address changing needs
Discuss sexual health, scheduling, privacy, jealousy, and how agreements can be revisited without punishment.
Understanding the subject
Polyamory commonly emphasizes the possibility of multiple consensual romantic relationships. Swinging often emphasizes consensual recreational sexual encounters, though communities and individuals vary. Open relationships, relationship anarchy, and other structures have distinct values and agreements. Ethical practice requires meaningful choice by everyone affected rather than merely a label.
Applying the knowledge responsibly
Discuss disclosure, sexual-health practices, scheduling, privacy, boundaries with metamours, and what happens when agreements change. Jealousy is neither proof that a relationship is unhealthy nor something a partner must suppress. Respect individual agency and avoid assuming a couple speaks for both members.
